Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - An Open Heart Throws No Stones

Pope Francis said, “If our hearts are closed, if our hearts are made of stone, the stones find their way into our hands and we are ready to throw them.”

What a wonderful, visual way of reminding us that conflict comes from a lack of desire to understand and accept another point of view.

Notice I said a lack of desire to understand, not a lack of understanding.

It’s the desire to understand that’s important because when we truly want to understand a different point of view, then our hearts are open. As grow-up human beings there are a lot of things we believe strongly, and that’s ok. A closed heart feels that those who disagree with what we believe are wrong. An open heart feels that others haven’t lived the same life as we have, so may have a different point of view, and their point of view is as valid to them as ours is to us.

Next time you hear something you disagree strongly with, check your hands – are there stones there, ready to be thrown? Open your heart and feel the stones disappear.
