Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Gutting the Gossip's Power
A friend calls people who love to talk about other people a “puddin’ stick” because they like to stir the puddin’. Do you know someone like that?
At some point in nearly everyone’s life they are the target of a puddin’ stick. It’s not fun – I say that from personal experience. When it happened to me the last time, I discovered the way to gut the gossiping person’s power – ignore them. Don’t defend yourself, don’t explain yourself, don’t try to get others to see the real you.
Ignore it all.
This is harder than it may sound because it’s human to want people to like and understand you, and when someone is going out of their way to trash your reputation you want to defend yourself.
Don’t. Ignore it all.
When you don’t react, the puddin’ stick will move on to their next target. They’re all about the drama, and when you refuse to play then you take the fun out of it for them and those who were enjoying watching you squirm. When you’re able to ignore the gossips you completely gut their power. Isn’t that more fun that getting all defensive?
