Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - The Problem with Solving Problems
We’re taught from childhood to solve problems. Weigh the pros and cons of a situation and choose the appropriate plan of action. We learn well that when we can figure out what’s wrong, we can fix it.
What we’re not taught is to evaluate a problem and decide whether or not it’s ours to fix.
Much of the stress many people feel is because they’re struggling with solving problems that they simply can’t, because it’s not in their power to fix.
- Want that new job you interviewed for last week? It’s out of your hands – the hiring decision belongs to someone else, so let go of the anxiety of waiting for news.
- Want your co-worker to carry her weight? She either will or she won’t, so unless you’re her manager, quit expecting her to behave in a way she clearly doesn’t want to behave.
- Want someone to love you? You can’t make them, so please stop changing yourself into something you’re not.
Be so focused on being the best version of yourself that you can be that you don’t even notice what other people are doing or not doing. Live your life on your terms and let others solve their own problems.
