Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - The Paradox of Giving Advice

Can I give you a piece of advice? Most people don’t need advice.

Oops…I think I just screwed up right there!

When someone is struggling and needs help, it’s human nature to want to help them, and some help is great and some help is very unhelpful.

I’ll give you a ridiculous example – say someone has fallen on the sidewalk and you rush to help them up. Helpful – yay, you! If you then go on to tell them that their choice of shoes is wrong and they need to wear something more appropriate, that’s unhelpful. You may mean well in the moment, and yet you know nothing about what caused the fall. You know nothing about them at all, you’re just dishing out facts that may or may not be helpful.

Lift them up, literally and figuratively, by letting them know you see them and care about them. That’s the best way to help anyone, no matter what they have going on in their life. If they want your advice, they’ll ask for it.
