Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Dealing With the Default You
Who is deciding your future? Is it you, or is it the default you?
What…you didn’t know there’s a default you? Yep…we all have one. It’s that version of ourselves who sits on the couch watching tv mindlessly. It’s that version of ourselves that hits the drive through instead of the grocery store. It’s that version of ourselves that promises to stop that bad habit…tomorrow.
Habits are hard-wired into our brains by repetition – the more you do something, the easier it is to keep doing it. That’s good when it’s something good like brushing and flossing, and not so good when it comes to other things.
Make the brain’s love of routine work for you – pick one thing you’d like to stop doing, focus on it, and each time you find yourself doing it, do something fun instead. For instance, I wanted to keep the TV off until after dinner, feeding dogs and cleaning the kitchen was done each day. Each time I found myself reaching for the remote, I picked up a dog toy instead and played with my dogs a little bit.
Figure out your version of fun, do it consistently and pretty soon your old routine won’t be a bad habit anymore!
