Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Watching Yourself Grow

Is something chewing at you right now?

I remember back when I was first married, had a bunch of friends and a husband who loved his circle of friends. Call me slow – it took me a while to realize that he expected me to do couples things with his friends and was never available to do things with mine. One day he said, “my friends are our friends, your friends are yours.”

That hurt.

I fretted and stewed about it for days, trying to understand such a strange, anti-social point of view from a man who seemed to be very social and extroverted. I’m not ashamed to tell you I cried over it. I didn’t jettison the friends, just lived a segregated life where they were concerned. I’m proud to tell you that if the same thing happened today I’d wonder what was wrong with the husband, not what was wrong with the friends.

What’s changed? I’ve learned and grown as a person, and I bet if you looked back in your life, you’d find a thing or two that you’d do differently. Look at how you’ve grown as a person – appreciate and celebrate how you’ve grown as a person, and realize that as long as you’re breathing you’ll be learning and growing.
