Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Being Best Friends with the World

Did you ever do this, too? Did you ever try to get someone to like you, either as a friend or romantically, and it just never worked?

Dad was career military, which meant our family moved every year or two while my brothers and I were growing up. Sometimes we’d land in a place filled with what felt like instant friends – sometimes, not so much. I remember trying to get one of my classmates to be my friend when I was in 4th It was like I didn’t exist to her. I’d bring an extra cookie to offer her at lunch. I’d invite her over after school. I’d ask her if she wanted to go on a bike ride on Saturday morning. Nope. Nothing. Nada.

Mom saw my efforts at friendship and reminded me that in the same way that I didn’t want to be best friends with every single person, others were allowed to not want to be my best friend, too.

So the next time you find yourself trying to get someone to understand you or like you or even love you, remember Mom’s wisdom – people are allowed to have their own feelings, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Move along…nothing to see here…
