Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Lights, Camera, Control
As we go through life, we collect painful experiences. Everyone does, and everyone processes the pain differently.
Some people just stash it in the back of their brain and forget it, until something happens that triggers the painful memory.
Some people examine the experience and find a satisfying way to fit it into the big picture of their lives.
And some people continue to feel the pain of those painful experiences every day.
Which category do you fall into? If you feel the pain of past experiences often, here’s something you can do that might help: Whenever the bad memories and the bad feelings that go with the experience pop into your head, start playing the part of the director of a Hollywood movie. Every time you remember the experience, pretend it was a movie you saw instead of something you experienced. Smell popcorn – hear the dramatic music – maybe even add comical elements to help lighten up your feelings about what happened.
When you can do this every time that bad thing pops into your head, you can shift the power it has over you. How do I know? This is exactly what I’ve done to ease the pain of my own past experiences. Neuroplasticity is a marvelous thing – reshape a memory to remove its power over your life.
