Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Scientific Method to the Rescue
Don’t let your biases get in the way of your results.
The scientific method has been in use since the 1600’s and it works like this – make an observation, form a hypothesis, gather information, make a prediction, conduct experiments, then analyze the results as they pertain to the hypothesis. Adjust as necessary to come to an untainted conclusion about the topic.
When you go into a conversation with someone and you’re already upset with them, you’re a human being – you probably will let your biases get in the way of your results. If you want to gain understanding, consensus and maybe even behavior change, use the scientific method. Observe your feelings, hypothesize the outcome you desire from the upcoming conversation, gather information about the problem from as many sources as possible, including sources that might prove you wrong, decide in your head how the conversation should go and then go have it.
When you can get your biases out of the way, you’ll be amazed how much better difficult conversations will be!
