Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Boundaries Beautiful Boundaries

Today I got mad at someone and then realized I needed to be mad at me. Someone expected me to drop everything and take care of their mess.

Why did I need to be mad at me?

Because up until today, I hadn’t given this person any boundaries. I like them, I like helping them and today there was one just request too many. Giving people we care about boundaries is hard – it doesn’t come naturally and it goes against our desire to build communities and be of service. And yet, boundaries are necessary because otherwise you’re disrespecting yourself, your time and your needs.

Think about someone in your life who might be taking things a step or two too far with you – is it time for you to set a boundary, too? When you do, it will either end your relationship with this person or improve it. If it ends, you’ll understand that they were just interested in what you could do for them.

My bet is that it will improve how the two of you communicate, because it’ll level your playing field.
