Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Taming the Damage Emotional Pain can Cause

Many people use pain as a wall to hide behind, ram into or as an excuse to not try. They do this because they don’t want to feel the pain and that’s a sensible desire. After all, who wants to feel pain?

When someone hides from pain, continually butts their head into something painful or uses the pain as an excuse to not grow, that’s not healthy. Just as physical pain causes us to stop doing something, like holding a match that’s burned all the way down, emotional pain is there to help us make choices that serve us better.

If you’re hiding behind a wall of pain, continually thrashing around in pain or using pain as an excuse to not move forward, choose a better reaction. Feel the pain, realize that whatever caused the pain is in the past and you have no power to change the past, and let your heart lead you out of pain and into a healthier, happier life.
