Veterinary Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Seeing the World Your Way
Have you heard the saying, “we don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are?” That may sound woo-woo and weird, but it’s a truth based in neuroscience.
In the last decade scientists using diffusion imaging have watched how the brain responds during learning. Something new goes to short-term memory for sorting, then moves to long-term memory where it’s compared with what is already known and stored with similar memories.
Some neurological connections have been activated often, like the act of driving to work, so those conscious thoughts don’t even have to happen before you’re able to carry them out – you just know. Because your brain has millions of existing connections like that, they shape the way you view the world. Your existing memories and beliefs inform what your brain does with new information, so your life experiences shape how you see the world now.
You see things as you are. And everyone else sees the world the way they are. Knowing this, isn’t it easier not to argue with people?
