Plato said, “No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.” He didn’t say it exactly that way – translations differ so that’s an English-language distillation of a two-sentence section of his Apology speech.

When you find yourself in the company of people who flatter and praise to someone’s face and then whisper behind their back, you are among people who aren’t worthy of your friendship or even your time. If they’re part of your team, then it’s time to give them a tough-love lesson on tough love.

It’s not kind to tell someone one thing to their face and gossip about the wrongness of that thing to others. It’s not kind and it’s a morale killer on a staff. It’s worth the risk to speak the truth, because then everyone is on the same page.
